It seeks to help you take your first steps by explaining what meditation means, its benefits and foundations, and how to begin your journey—from starting the climb to reaching the summit. All you need to do is begin reading, and you will have taken the first step.

What is meditation?

Meditation is defined as a process concerned with achieving mindfulness. It requires you simply to sit quietly, direct your attention inward, and try to focus there, with the aim of reducing the stress you experience and creating a connection with yourself. Despite its simplicity, this process requires some brief guidance to help you practice meditation as fully as possible.

The importance of guidance lies in helping you feel safe, ensuring that you meditate correctly, and making the results more effective. Guidance also enables you to notice potential mistakes and understand how to correct them if they occur.

Meditation is a journey or adventure that enables you to look at your life more broadly. It also helps you see directions and paths different from those you currently follow, encouraging you to create another meaning for your life. To achieve this, you need only take the first step toward meditation—a step that begins where you are and ends where you want to be.

Key meditation techniques you can easily learn:

  1. Repeating words or phrases that hold significance and meaning for you.
  2. Maintaining full awareness of the present moment.
  3. Regulating and observing your breathing.
  4. Noticing how your breathing affects your body and how you feel.
  5. Thinking about feelings of kindness, compassion, forgiveness, and healing, which helps them arise within you continually.
  6. Focusing on a geometric shape or another simple visual object.
  7. Imagining yourself in a peaceful place or picturing an entity filled with energy and healing.
  8. Reading and reflecting on inspirational or sacred writings.
  9. Gazing at an image of a sacred nature.

How do I begin meditating?

  1. Choose a suitable place where you can lie down or sit comfortably:There are many routes or paths we can take to practice meditation, depending on the goal we seek to achieve through it and on our energy and motivation. For you, the best path to meditation might involve going somewhere completely quiet and serene, pausing midway through a walk, or climbing rocky peaks that lead you to a high summit where you can meditate. You should understand that although the paths and routes where we practice meditation are varied, they all lead to the same place and purpose.
  2. Create a destination or goal for your meditation practice:This enables you to create a distinctive meditation experience capable of fulfilling its purpose, so that meditation does not become merely a ritual involving lying or sitting down.
  3. Breathe naturally, and do not devote your efforts during meditation to controlling your breathing:Whatever destination you seek through meditation, you will reach it and gain many benefits simply by breathing deeply and exercising muscles in your body that you did not know existed.
  4. As you breathe, observe and focus on how your body responds, particularly around your abdomen and chest.
  5. Try to maintain your concentration as much as possible:If you notice your focus and attention wandering, try to gather your mental and psychological strength, return to breathing deeply, and think about what you hope to achieve through meditation.
  6. There is no fixed time or duration for practicing meditation:You can practice for five to ten minutes at first and then gradually increase the duration each time.

Signs of successful meditation:

  1. It enables you to develop discipline, explore, and learn how to make your way toward what you want:In the past, and throughout the history of meditation, people’s pursuit of meditation and exploration enabled them to create maps and guides that helped them find their way.
  2. Meditation becomes a spiritual path for you that includes a set of beliefs and practices.
  3. Meditation becomes capable of treating many illnesses..
  4. Achieving better mental and physical health, by reducing stress and tension and strengthening your sense of peace and inspiration.

Meditation as a whole is a journey of ascent and climbing toward a mountain summit. This comparison invites you to imagine that the summit contains something that fills existence and gives it meaning, whatever form that meaning takes, whether grace or unconditional love. Yet meditation is a journey that helps you realize that the purpose is not to reach the summit but to follow the path toward it, as you can find the meaning of existence during the journey. Meditation helps you understand that the true meaning of existence can be found in many things—not only at the summit, but everywhere and in everything—because existence is the essence that sustains life at every level.

Therefore, when you begin meditating, it does not matter which direction you take or where you stop on your way up the mountain, as long as you can still immerse your hands in the meaning of existence and taste it for yourself. You need only know that you can begin finding it wherever you go.
