The Silent Treatment: Emotional Manipulation in Relationships
Last reviewed: 11 August 2026

The silent treatment is a form of emotional manipulation and even psychological violence. It involves deliberate verbal silence directed at another person and can range from simply frowning at them to harboring resentment and trying to control or exploit them.
It is also commonly used as a way to control another person and is a form of passive aggression. A person may feel that they are bad but be unable to express themselves. Although they are verbally silent, they are not silent inside. This leads them to send nonverbal messages that attract the other person's attention and cause them pain. The silent treatment also gives the “sulking” or “silent” person a sense of dominance because the other person feels anxious and does not know when the silence will end.
How is the silent treatment used?
In relationships, the silent treatment may appear when a partner withdraws in the middle of a discussion and refuses to participate in any way that would allow it to continue. The silence may even last for days or weeks. Several signs may indicate the presence of the silent treatment, including:
The other person ignores you.
They express their anger toward you nonverbally.
They exclude you from a shared project.
They involve another person to threaten you.
They do not respond to anything you say or do.
When does the silent treatment become emotional abuse?
It is important to recognize certain signs that the silent treatment may be entering the territory of emotional abuse: when it happens repeatedly and lasts for increasingly long periods; when it is used to punish the other person; when it ends only after the other person apologizes, pleads, submits, or gives in to the demands and wishes of the person using it; or when it ends only after the other person changes their behavior to avoid receiving the silent treatment.

How can we repair a romantic relationship harmed by the silent treatment?
The silent treatment is a form of emotional manipulation. Once it becomes firmly established as the relationship's dominant pattern, the relationship will ultimately be destined to fail. For partners to repair a relationship harmed by repeated use of the silent treatment, they must agree that it is not the best way to resolve their marital problems. They can also consult a couples therapist who can help them adopt healthier approaches to dialogue that serve both partners better and do not exclude one or both of them.
The silent treatment can diminish our self-respect, self-worth, and self-love. Anyone who has repeatedly experienced it needs to receive and benefit from individual therapy to rebuild their self-respect and self-love. No matter how strong our feelings are for someone we love, we should enter the relationship with enough awareness to recognize warning signs during the early stages of getting to know them, such as a partner using the silent treatment or manipulating our emotions. These signs should be viewed as warnings that threaten the relationship's future success and continuity.
