How Can I Overcome the Psychological Effects of Marital Infidelity?
Last reviewed: 11 August 2026

When emotional bonds between spouses weaken and the initial feelings and love are no longer present, the likelihood of marital infidelity increases. Psychologists and specialists consider the loss of love and affection, spouses no longer finding each other attractive, one partner neglecting the other, a lack of control over sexual desire and sexual complexes, intolerable character and behavior in the other partner, the belief that marital infidelity causes no harm, a lack of control over desires, and a strong inclination toward variety to be among the most significant factors leading to marital infidelity. In this article, we will explain the psychological effects of marital infidelity and how to overcome them.
Reasons for marital infidelity:
There are many reasons, which I will mention briefly without implying any order or priority. They include:
- Emotionally cold relationships: When the emotional bond and love between spouses diminish and the original affection and love are no longer felt, one spouse may enter another relationship.
- Disregard for each other's appearance: In married life, one spouse may lose the ability to arouse the other, or the other partner may no longer find them as arousing as desired because of life's monotony and immersion in routine. Some spouses come to relate to each other like siblings after only a short period of marriage.
- Low self-esteem and a negative self-image: To preserve and strengthen their self-esteem and self-image, people try to demonstrate through their behavior that their self-esteem is high and that they have no problem in this regard. These people seek relationships outside the family system to prove themselves. Sometimes, of course, cultures create perceptions that push a man to prove himself through virility and a woman through feminine charm.
- Forced marriage:A man or woman who marries against their will and at their family's request is more likely than others to be unfaithful to their partner.
- Unmet sexual needs: People who have sexual problems may try to be unfaithful to their partner instead of resolving their problems through psychological and family counseling and consulting specialists.
- Psychological excitement: Some people like doing things in secret because it excites them and makes them feel clever, as though other people cannot understand what is happening. But we should know that one day the relationship will be discovered.
What are the psychological effects of marital infidelity?
- Feeling let down.
- A lack of self-confidence and loss of trust in others.
- Feeling sad, especially when the infidelity is first discovered.
- Developing a desire for revenge.
- Constantly thinking about the reasons for the infidelity, causing anxiety and fear.
- Previous feelings manifesting as physical symptoms, such as headaches.
How can I overcome the psychological effects of marital infidelity?
- Do not reproach or blame yourself for choosing this person as your partner.
- Do not deny what you feel. Acknowledge these feelings, and do not believe that denying them means they do not exist.
- Learn how to manage the negative feelings caused by the infidelity.
- Do not expect to recover quickly from the effects of this relationship.
- Be aware of the nature of the decision you will make about this relationship, and do not make hasty decisions that could create further psychological crises for you.
In conclusion, it must be emphasized that the ideas presented in this article are an explanation of marital infidelity, not a justification for it. Every behavior has a cause that must be understood in order to address it. When addressing marital infidelity, we should examine the extent to which society and the prevailing culture contribute to its increasing prevalence. When society becomes more tolerant of this kind of behavior, offers no means of preventing it, and treats relationships arising from marital infidelity as normal, the ugliness of the issue will inevitably fade. This also leads us to see an increase in relationships outside marriage, whether before or after marriage.
