Visual Art Therapy
Last reviewed: 11 August 2026

Psychotherapy includes an approach known as “art therapy,” which combines psychological therapies with artistic processes. Art therapy is one of the therapeutic approaches that has recently become more widespread around the world, and it has proved successful in supporting several groups with different psychological and emotional needs.
There are five different therapeutic paths within art therapy:
Visual arts, musical arts, movement arts, dramatic arts, and literary arts.
A client who engages in a creative activity such as music, drawing, drama, movement, or writing is invited by the therapist to discuss the emotional and psychological experience arising from the creative process and their response to the artwork. During the therapeutic process, this helps the client reach new insights that support their psychological and emotional growth and their ability to adapt to themselves, their surroundings, and their society.
Art therapy is primarily defined as a way to strengthen the “ego,” build the self, and support its growth, thereby improving quality of life.
Art therapy contributes to strengthening self-esteem and increasing self-confidence. It improves the ability to build healthier and more stable relationships, regulate sensations and emotions, and improve personal, psychological, emotional, cognitive, family, social, educational, and motor functioning. This helps the client progress in different areas of life, experience comfort, and consequently improve their quality of life.
“Visual art therapy” is a psychological and emotional therapy based on free creativity, visualization, and imagination, unrestricted by the medium. Shapes and colors form an indirect language—the language of the soul and psyche—that helps people express feelings and sensations that are often difficult to express verbally. The nonverbal symbolic language of art that emerges from the creative process is universal. Over time, it becomes an alternative to spoken language for self-expression, allowing people to express themselves spontaneously and reveal what lies hidden deep within them.
Art therapy is considered suitable for people of all ages, from early childhood at age three through their nineties and beyond, who experience emotional or sensory difficulties, developmental problems, family difficulties, social difficulties, difficulties resulting from congenital physical conditions, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), or behavioral problems. It is also suitable for anyone willing to try different art materials, regardless of whether they have artistic talent or previous experience in the field.
Treatment may be provided individually, in pairs as couples, with families, or in groups composed of people with similar characteristics and therapeutic needs.
Treatment for children may be individual with parental guidance, dyadic (a parent-child pairing), or group-based for children with similar needs and/or difficulties.
Treatment is adapted according to the client’s age, development, and psychological, emotional, cognitive, motor, family, and social condition.
