In this article, we address an important question: Is psychotherapy necessary in our lives? The importance of psychotherapy has long been overlooked and treated as something secondary that can be disregarded. If we had sufficient awareness of its importance, our society would certainly be better off. To help raise awareness of psychotherapy, we present this article.

What is psychotherapy?

It is treatment concerned with addressing illnesses or disorders affecting mental and psychological health, using psychological therapeutic methods. These methods are based on approaches and theories that seek to treat the disorder a patient is experiencing by understanding the society in which they grew up, their surroundings, and their behaviors, including their emotions and feelings. The aim is to develop a treatment plan that considers all the causes of the disorder and provides the most suitable treatment, enabling the person to establish a healthy social, emotional, and professional life.

What are the types of psychotherapy?

  1. Psychoanalysis.
  2. Behavioral therapy
  3. Cognitive therapy.
  4. Supportive psychotherapy.
  5. Psychodynamic psychotherapy (psychoanalytic therapy).
  6. Interpersonal therapy (support groups).

Is psychotherapy necessary in our lives?

Many societies view psychotherapy as a luxury rather than a priority. Accordingly, we will explain the importance of psychotherapy:

  1. It helps us express what we feel and what we cannot say, to a specialist who helps us interpret our thoughts and feelings.
  2. Psychotherapy helps us understand ourselves and our needs.
  3. It helps you view the problem from a broader perspective, developing a more expansive way of thinking and greater awareness.
  4. Psychotherapy does not give you a solution to the problem. Instead, it enables you to build a plan through which you can create and choose the right solution.
  5. Psychotherapy enables us to build healthy social, professional, and emotional relationships.

When does someone need psychotherapy?

  1. When they need to address weak communication skills, whether with a partner, a colleague, or anyone else.
  2.  To address family and parenting problems..
  3. To reduce the intensity of anxiety or severe stress, resulting, for example, from work or other situations.
  4. When someone is unable to adapt to major life changes that affect them, such as divorce, the death of a loved one, or the loss of a job.
  5. To recognize and control unhealthy reactions, such as anger or passive-aggressive behavior.
  6. When someone is facing chronic physical health problems, such as diabetes, cancer, or even certain long-term chronic pain conditions.
  7. When someone is recovering from physical or sexual assault or after witnessing acts of violence.
  8. To address difficulties adapting to sexual problems, whether they result from a physical or psychological cause.
  9. To treat insomnia and sleep problems.

Do not dismiss your feelings, however minor they may seem, because they may begin that way and end badly. Believe me, many psychological disorders could often have been avoided simply by discussing them with a mental health specialist who could help us understand them and learn how to manage them. You must disregard society’s stereotype of psychotherapy as a stigma, take care of yourself, and begin your psychotherapy journey before it is too late.
