A study conducted by the University of Georgia found that if you want a long and happy married life, you should begin practicing the use of the word “thank you” at every opportunity. Spouses who express gratitude are more satisfied with their relationship. This begins with noticing and appreciating all the little things a partner does for you, from preparing the morning coffee to letting you choose the film you want to watch.

If you find it difficult to thank your spouse or life partner even for small things, try a five-day gratitude challenge for your partner using a variety of ways to express gratitude.

Five ways to develop and strengthen gratitude with your life partner

  1. Create a refreshing moment: Set aside time to drink coffee, watch a film, or go for a walk, and surprise your partner with it. Tell them, “I appreciate your efforts toward me, and I am grateful to you.”
  2. Offer a kiss or a warm embrace: Use it to express gratitude for your partner’s presence in your life and for their continued contributions to making the relationship better.
  3. Tell your partner about their good qualities: Speak to them about their virtues, beautiful qualities, and the moments that reveal their great love and devotion to you. This can make your partner feel that you are grateful to them.
  4. Say thank you: It is that simple and not difficult. If your partner provides a service or help, or fulfills their role toward you by cooking food, bringing medicine, or preparing a cup of coffee, say thank you—or write a message telling them that you are grateful.
  5. Support them and stand by them: Offer comfort to your partner’s heart and spirit, and be a source of strength for them. If you see them feeling sad, try to ease their sadness. If they seem bored, try to bring some joy to their time. If you find them discouraged, offer suitable support. This makes them feel your care, which falls within the scope of gratitude.
